What is dyslexia?

Dyslexia is a specific learning difference that primarily affects reading and related language-based processing skills. What are effective treatment for dyslexia?

Effective treatments often include structured literacy programs that are explicit, multi-sensory, and systematic. These programs focus on phonics, phonemic awareness, vocabulary development, reading fluency, and comprehension strategies.

Are there any advantages to dyslexia?

Many individuals with dyslexia develop strong problem-solving skills and creative thinking abilities, and have strengths in verbal comprehension and visual-spatial thinking. They often excel in areas that don't rely heavily on reading and writing. Successful people with dyslexia include: Richard Branson, Agatha Christie, Steven Spielberg, Albert Einstein, Pablo Picasso, Cher, and Charles Schwab.

Is dyslexia related to intelligence?

No, dyslexia is not related to intelligence. In fact, many highly intelligent people have dyslexia.

What are some related learning differences to dyslexia?

Dysgraphia, Dyscalculia, and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) are the most common related or similar learning differences.

Dysgraphia affects a person's ability to write coherently, regardless of their ability to read.


Dyscalculia affects a person's ability to grasp and remember math concepts, procedures, and sequences.

ADHD affects a person's ability to focus, control impulsive behaviors, or may result in being overly active.

How can teachers support students with dyslexia?

Teachers can support students with dyslexia by providing structured and systematic reading instruction, offering accommodations like extra time or alternative formats for assignments, and using multi-sensory teaching methods.
